What you must do

(Recommended 1000 word)

Scenario

Angela is a 45-year-old woman with moderate learning disabilities. She lives at home with her elderly parents Mary and Andrew, and attends a day center five days a week in the mornings. Angela’s support worker, Jo has noticed a change in Angela’s behavior over recent weeks. Her behavior has become more challenging and is increasingly argumentative with the other service users. When Jo speaks to Angela it is apparent that she is very unhappy and complains that she wants to live in her own place. Jo organises a case conference to discuss Angela’s needs with her
parents and members of the multidisciplinary team. At the meeting, when Jo mentions that Angela has expressed a wish to live on her own, Mary becomes very angry, accusing Jo of putting ideas into Angela’s head. Angela also gets very upset and accuses her mother of not wanting her to have her own life. Jo manages to calm the situation and agrees to speak to Angelas’s parents separately, with Angela’s consent.

At the meeting with Mary and Andrew it emerges that Andrew’s health is deteriorating and Mary is increasingly unable to rely on him to help in caring for Angela. Instead, she finds herself needing to care for both of them. Andrew used to take Angela out for long walks most afternoons, while they were out; Mary used the time to relax in the afternoons. However, due to Andrew’s health issues, the walks have gradually stopped and Mary is finding it difficult having both Andrew and Angela ‘under her feet’ all day.

Using the case scenario above apply your answers to the following in a fact sheet for AC [1.1] For AC [1.2, 1.3 1.4] write a report.

In the first section present your answers in a fact sheet. You must explain with examples how principles of support are applied to guarantee that Angela and her parents are cared for in Health and Social Care practice. In your answers, you could use examples such as dignity, choice, respecting diversity, privacy, independence etc. In addition you can use examples from the knowledge gained in Unit 4 (Personal and Professional Development in HSC) and experience gained from your HSC workplace practice to support your answer to the question. [P1.1]

In this second section you must outline in a report what are the procedures for protecting clients such as Angela and her parents, as well as work colleagues from harm. For example in your outline you could focus on confidentiality, policies about sharing information etc. Again use examples from knowledge and experience acquired from Unit 4 (Personal and Professional Development in HSC) and your workplace practice to support your answer. [P1.2]

In this section, you should analyse the advantage of using a person centred approach with users such as Angela of health and social care services. [P1.3, M1] Give some examples to demonstrate your understanding of how you used a person centred approach with service users in health and social care using knowledge and experience acquired from Unit 4 (Personal and Professional Development in HSC) workplace practice in health and social care: You could include in your analysis why it is important to support the preferences of the service users such as Angela; why is it
important to support service users’ rights and maintain their dignity and why is it important to support others to make informed choices about the services they need. [P1.3, M1]

In the final section of your report, summarise a short case study by explaining how ethical dilemmas and conflicts may arise when providing care, support and protection to users of health and social care. For example, you could incorporate into your discussion concepts such as protection from risk of harm; rights of individuals to take risks etc. Your answers should also reflect an ethical dilemma you have experienced when delivering care and how those were resolved. This is linked to your workplace practice experience. [P1.4]

  • To achieve M1, an effective approach to study and research has been applied with an in-depth analysis of the advantages of person centered approach as applied to the case scenario and also using examples from your own health workplace setting.

What you must do

Scenario

CQC recently published the findings following an inspection of services provided at a Tower Hamlets Care Home and the report was discussed in Board meeting. The report concludes that there was a systemic failure to protect people or to investigate allegations of abuse. There are allegations of poor care and mistreatment of the elderly residents for example underfeeding of the residents, left soiled in their beds and unexplained bruising. There had been some cases where residents were given wrong doses of medication, and in one case staff falsified medical records after realising a patient had been overdosed and shredded the evidence.

Targeting the provision of effective care and support, it is important for new newly recruited care workers to have a good understanding of the theories which underpin professional practice, impact of social processes and effectiveness of inter professional working. Your line manager has asked to carry out research and deliver seminar paper on theories which underpin health and social care practice, for the care workers. Produce a handout for care workers.

In the first part of your handout that will be given out at the seminar you need to explain theories that underpin health and social care. For example, you could explain the ideas of human growth and development using theorist (i.e. Erikson, Freud, etc.), managing stress (Elisabeth Kubler Ross) and behaviour and use examples from own workplace in the context of health and social care to buttress your explanation. [P3.1]

In the second part of your seminar paper, analyse with examples the impact of social processes, e.g. poverty, unemployment, social exclusion, marginalisation etc. in health and social care in a diverse society. How does these social processes combine to shape the life of an individual [P3.2, M2]

Finally, in your seminar paper, evaluate the effectiveness of inter professional working. You are expected to give examples from experiences from own workplace to show the effectiveness of inter professional working. [P3.3, D1]

  • To achieve M2, relevant theories about social processes have been applied giving examples of how they combine to have an impact on the service users.
  • To achieve D1 you must critically evaluate your work and draw conclusions. You must be critical of ideas put forward during the seminar on inter professional working and offer justification on how the conclusions have been developed.
