The aim of this unit is to develop learners’ awareness of different forms of communication used in health and social care settings and its importance for effective service delivery. You will investigate the communication processes in health and social care settings, exploring how communication skills are used in health and social care and developing an understanding of how various factors influence the communication process within a health and social care context. You will explore the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in health and social care, and examine the legal frameworks involved.

Title: “ICT is an essential tool for any health and social care institution.” To what extent do you agree with this statement? Write a report exploring the use and benefits of information and communication technology (ICT) at  your placement within a health and social care organisation.

As part of this assignment, you should also complete an ICT Self-Assessment form, identifying how you currently use and access ICT in the workplace. This should be signed by your manager. See Moodle

This assignment addresses all aspects of Learning Objective 3. Your assignment should address each of the following criteria as outlined above: 3.1, 3.2
and 3.3.

Guidance for completion of the report:

– Research the types of ICT software and hardware that support work in health and social care, what these types of software are and how they are used by service users and service providers

– Analyse and evaluate the benefits of using ICT in health and social care for service users

– Analyse and evaluate the benefits of using ICT in health and social care for service providers and organisations

– Consider the legal issues associated with using ICT in health and social care, such as data protection, confidentiality and health and safety issues

– Discuss the potential issues surrounding the use of ICT in health and social care

– Remember to refer to a range of academic sources in your report

Essay: Effective communication is vital to the operation of any health and social care organisation. Drawing on your own experience within a health and social care organisation, write an essay discussing the use of communication skills in a health and social care context, exploring the various factors that can influence the communication process and the ways in which the communication needs of service users can be met.

As part of this assignment, you should be able to demonstrate that you can use communication skills in a health and social care context. You may wish to draw on evidence submitted as part of your portfolio for Unit 4.

– apply at least two theories of communication and show how this relates to the concepts you are discussing

– Explain how the communication process is influenced by various values and cultural factors (for example: race, ethnicity, gender, religion, social/economic background)

– Discuss how legislation and codes of practice impact on the communication process, for instance relating to discrimination and equal opportunities.

– Analyse how good practice is promoted within health and social care organisations, including the effectiveness of these good practice policies and suggestions for improvements – drawing on your own experiences
