What is a demonstration speech?

A demonstration speech is a type of informational speaking. The goal of the demonstration speech is to demonstrate a process or how to do something and provide the audience information while using visual aids.

The Demonstration Speech Outline

Just as there are various demonstration speech topics, there are so many ways to create a demonstration speech. You will rarely go wrong, but, if you apply this basic speech outline, it will help you to create the best demonstration speech;

  • Start with why
  •  Give a quicksummary of the whole process
  •  Go through the steps, one-by-one
  •  For each, define it, then show it
  •   Discuss options, extras, or variations(Optional)
  • Allow time for Q&A
  • Summarize briefly

Each of these six steps is explained below.

 Start with why

A demonstration speech is about training the audience to perform a task and complete a process. Just as with any educational task, it helps extremely if your audience is motivated to learn.

that’s why it’s important to tell your audience how they will benefit from the knowledge you are sharing. Once your audience knows why they are learning this new task, they will be prompt to learn.

  •           Earn and save money?
  •         Earn a promotion?
  •         Build their range of skills?
  •         Save them time?
  •       Make their life easier?
  •    Provide enjoyment or satisfaction?
  •       Make them happy?

There are several ways to motivate your audience, but the best way is to open with a story. Paint a picture of how their life will develop with this new knowledge.

Give a quick summary of the whole process

Before you go too deep into the details, it is important to show an overview of the process and overall task

A brief, high-level overview of the steps includes gives a mental framework for the audience upon that they can hang the details as you give them later in the speech.

When learning a new task, various people in your audience will fear that it is complicated. An early overview to get trust your audience that it is not fully complex.

If you fail to show an outline, it’s difficult for your audience to see how the steps will fit together later on. The audience won’t have the needed context.

The best way to show the overview is with a diagram illustrating the steps of the task at a high level. You can refer to this diagram all over.

Along with the overview, you should also list the prerequisites needed for the task, and other assumptions you are making.

 Go through steps one-by-one

From a speaker’s point of view, the best thing about a demonstration speech is that the core of your outline is produced for you: you simply have to go through the task steps in sequential order.

Make the series of steps as simple as possible. Break the process down to the most needed steps that will lead your audience successfully from beginning to finish. There’s no “best” number of steps, but keep the number of the steps as low as possible. Don’t present a 19-step process unless your goal is saying confusing.

Defer optional steps for later in your presentation. It is best to ignore complicating matters on the first pass.

For every step, you should:

Ø  Explain the purpose of the step

Ø  Explain the step in simple, straightforward language

Ø  Show how to complete the step

Discuss options, or variations, extras (Optional)

Now that your audience has seen the task or process demonstrated from beginning to finish, you can give some additional options or variations.

For instance, if you are explaining how to cook some recipes, start with the basic version first. After that’s done, you can discuss alternate ingredients, various flavors to try, and other ways to build on the basic recipe.

Allow time for Q&A

many types of speeches benefit from taking questions from the audience and answering them, and a Q&A session is especially well-suited for a demonstration speech. This allows the audience to take clarification on any of the steps that were unclear.

Depending on your topic and the forum in that you are speaking, you may choose to take questions at the end, or you may invite questions throughout your demonstration.

Summarize briefly

Finally, you should summarize the process briefly, and recap the benefits that your audience will realize if they perform the desired process or task.
