The video covers the goals for change in Bertie County, which were to apply design within education and finding a way of initiating community development through education. Strategies were taken to the intersection of design and education to achieve these changes. Examples of strategies that resulted in changes, as retrieved from “Teaching Design for Change” a TED talk presented by Emily Pilloton, may include a designing education, education redesigning, and design as education (TED, 2010). Designing for education involved physical construction of materials, enhanced spaces, and experiences that were meant for students and teachers. The redesigning education strategy was a system’s level look that aimed at identifying what was offered, how education was administered, and who were its recipients. The approach involved the creation of appropriate conditions that will facilitate or dictate change. Lastly, design as education represented educating designing in public schools that involved incorporating designing and learning real skills on construction and fabrication.

To gather information on a particular community or group of people, public nurses must utilize community assessment approaches that will be appropriate in gathering such information. In the epidemiological approach, the focus is on data such as mortality and morbidity rates that portray the community’s health problems. The community’s needs and what the people want are examined through the needs-based approach through the utilization of focus groups and key informant interviews. Age, gender, and various sensor track information are put into consideration in the demographic approach. Lastly, as covered in the class materials, the community development approach puts focus on the assets and strengths of the community, in terms of facilities, people, structure, among others.
