In this course we have begun the process of “knowing the wound,” including some of the symptoms of the wound. We have discussed issues of stereotyping, the Western education system, and the Anishinabe philosophy of education. We have also talked about how these issues affect the everyday lives of Anishinaabe peoples. This paper is a chance for you to write your own thoughts and reflections on these issues.
For this paper, read the following sections of Teaching What Really Happened:
– Foreword (pages ix – xiii)
– Chapter 5 How and When Did People Get Here? (pages 103 – 122)
Write a 2-3 page reflection paper keeping in mind the things we have discusses so far in class. When reading these sections, consider how the Anishinabe people and culture have been and continue to be excluded from the education system.
The page count does not include a title page and bibliography, these must be separate pages. Papers that receive the highest marks will include aspects of the two following points: 1) connections to course content as evidence that you have understood material discussed in classes, 2) your own, personal reflections on the concepts discussed in the assigned readings. To clarify, you are NOT writing a chapter summary. You are expected to clearly demonstrate
independent thought and show your own ideas about the topics being discussed both in the readings and in class. Outside research is not a requirement for this paper.
Standard writing guidelines will be expected. Papers not written in size 12, times new roman font with standard 2.52 cm margins will not be accepted.
Shingwauk takes seriously the issue of plagiarism. Any papers found to contain plagiarism, or any form of academic dishonesty will receive a mark of 0 on the paper. Repeat offenders will be reported to the Dean.
